Teaching

The key principle that guides my undergraduate teaching is that learning is an active, not receptive, process.  The more active students are in their own education, the more motivated they will be (both within the class and as lifelong learners), and the more they will take away from their courses.  To put this principle into practice, I set ambitious but achievable goals for students in my courses (such as evaluating accounts of social institutions by applying them to specific institutions they care about) and design a sequence of assignments to allow them to move toward those goals.  I also get students active in every class session, whether through discussion, group work, or short writing assignments.
